Kx Advisors Spotlight: Zoe James

Zoe James is a Senior Associate Consultant at Kx Advisors. Get to know her and her Kx journey so far!

What do you enjoy most about working at Kx?

I really enjoy the projects that I get to work on at Kx both internally and externally. The client work is incredibly interesting, and I love that I have the opportunity to become an expert in so many diseases and markets – talking to doctors who are at the top of their field is a particular highlight of the role! Beyond project work, I volunteer on two Kx committees; Kx Giving and Kx Fun. I love working with the other committee members to brainstorm event ideas and organise them for the London team. A couple of my highlights have been the holiday party and volunteering at Stepney Farm last summer.

How would you describe the Kx culture?

The culture at Kx is incredibly supportive and friendly, everyone is genuinely valued and respected! One of the things that I think really adds to the supportive culture is the mentor programme. I am lucky enough to have two mentors and they have both been invaluable to my development so far.

What is something Kx does that has helped grow you professionally?

One of the things that I love about Kx is the responsibility and endless opportunities to grow. From early on as an associate you may be the only consultant on a project, working directly with a manager. As challenging as this may be, it allows you to take ownership of a significant proportion of the work and quickly develop your consulting skills. This steep and continuous learning curve is one of the things I love about Kx!

How did you come to join Kx?

I interned with Kx during the summer of 2021. I loved the work and the people so much, I ended up declining my master’s offer and joining five weeks later full-time. I had always considered pursuing a career in consulting because I realised that I love analysing problems in markets as a whole and thinking of new and creative ways companies could succeed. Kx seemed like an excellent fit as it combined my love of science with my interest in helping businesses grow long-term, develop, and overcome their challenges. Beyond this, I think consulting is an excellent first job. The variety of projects we are exposed to at Kx is not only interesting but allows you to quickly build a wide range of transferable skills enabling you to pivot into a variety of roles afterward.

Outside of work, what do you do for fun/ how do you spend your free time?

Outside of work, I spend a lot of my time sailing. I compete most weekends with my family and friends on our boat called Banter. The highlight event of the year is Cowes Week, one of the world’s largest sailing events. Sadly, we have been runners-up in our class four years in a row and twice to the overall winners. Hopefully, this year everything will finally come together, and we will win! When I am not spending my holidays or weekends sailing, I am either skiing or exploring a city. Over the Easter holidays I managed to squeeze in a four-day trip to Paris and in December spent a week visiting Florence and Venice in Italy.
